Title: FIV-UR: Sweet Science, Smarter Therapy [English] Description: Urinary tract infections (UTIs) are one of the most common bacterial infections, yet treatment increasingly faces challenges from antibiotic resistance. We are engineering a bacterial sensing system that detects the chemical environment of a UTI and responds by producing a targeted anti-inflammatory compound. During a UTI, the infecting bacteria alter local levels of nutrients like phosphate and magnesium. Our system exploits this: when those nutrient levels drop, natural bacterial signaling pathways switch on a gene that produces an enzyme called YjiC. This enzyme modifies fisetin, a plant-derived anti-inflammatory molecule, into a more soluble, bioavailable form that can help reduce the inflammation and tissue damage caused by infection. Rather than flooding the body with a drug, our approach aims to produce the therapeutic only where and when infection is present. Wiki | Official Page
