<description>Title: BlueCatcher Description: Depression is one of the leading mental health challenges worldwide, yet current diagnosis still relies heavily on subjective clinical assessment. In our project, BlueCatcher, we developed a synthetic biology-based platform to support depression screening through microRNA biomarkers associated with depressive disorders. By integrating bioinformatics, machine learning, and electrochemical biosensing, we designed a clinically feasible system capable of providing objective biological information to healthcare professionals. Throughout our project, we collaborated with psychiatrists, psychologists, ethicists, and regulatory experts, leading us to redesign our initial wearable concept into a hospital-operated platform that prioritizes safety, ethics, and clinical responsibility. BlueCatcher demonstrates how synthetic biology can complement, rather than replace, clinical diagnosis, with the vision of making mental healthcare more accessible, reliable, and ethically responsible.
