<description>Title: EMPOWER: Engineering Microbes to Promote Ovarian Wellbeing and Recovery Description: Women’s health remains significantly under-researched, leaving conditions such as Polyendocrine Metabolic Ovarian Syndrome (PMOS, formerly PCOS) with limited treatment options despite affecting millions of women worldwide. Our project focuses on the gut microbiome, particularly Phocaeicola vulgatus, which is overrepresented in women with PMOS and produces bile salt hydrolases (BSHs) that are hypothesised to be linked to hormonal imbalances. We aim to engineer P. vulgatus to reduce its BSH activity and investigate the effects of this modification in the laboratory, with the long-term goal of contributing to a novel microbiome-based treatment for PMOS. At the same time, we aim to raise awareness of the importance of research related to women’s health and encourage further research into the role of the gut microbiome in PMOS.
