Title: SeisMIC - Stabilizing the soil ahead of us Description: Could tiny bacteria help stabilise Alpine slopes? Meet SeisMIC, the University of Zurich’s iGEM 2026 project. We explore how bacteria could produce calcium carbonate, a natural mineral that binds soil particles together, to strengthen shallow Alpine soils vulnerable to heavy rainfall. Our work combines synthetic biology, cold adaptation experiments, and computer modelling to investigate where this approach might work and what it would take to make it practical. Conversations with researchers, industry specialists, and local families help us consider environmental impacts, community priorities, and responsible development. SeisMIC is an early step towards understanding a potential biological approach to slope stabilization. Wiki | Official Page
