Title: kisMET: A Biosorption Platform for Low-Concentration Metal Recovery from End-of-Pipe Battery Wastewater Description: Lithium-ion battery recycling retains low-concentration residual metal ions in end-of-pipe wastewater, causing resource loss and environmental burden with conventional chemical treatment. We present kisMET, a biosorption platform built on engineered Komagataeibacter rhaeticus that produces bacterial cellulose microspheres displaying metal-binding peptides to selectively capture Li⁺, Co²⁺, Ni²⁺ and Mn²⁺. Our chassis secretes cellulose and functional peptides synchronously in fermentation, forming reusable adsorbent microspheres. Through multi-stakeholder interviews with battery enterprises, regulatory experts and iGEM peers, we iteratively defined kisMET as a supplementary end-of-pipe treatment unit rather than a full replacement for existing processes. We performed TEA and LCA analysis to evaluate cost and carbon footprint, alongside public science outreach. This modular system provides a mild, low-reagent route for metal ion circularity, aligning with multiple UN SDGs. Our engineered bacteria can recover 19.14% of Li, 67.76% of Ni, 76.09% of Co, and 41.08% of Mn at a metal ion concentration of 10 mg/L. Wiki | Official Page
