<description>Title: Pine Protector Description: Pine forests are more than trees—they are vital ecosystems, homes to countless species, and an essential part of our shared natural heritage. Yet pine wilt disease, known as the “cancer of pine trees,” is spreading across the world, rapidly killing pine trees. With no effective cure available, current control efforts rely largely on felling and burning infected trees—a costly approach underscoring the urgent need for better solutions. PineProtector harnesses the power of synthetic biology to explore a targeted, sustainable, and biosafety-conscious approach to disease management. We engineered Bacillus subtilis to target both the pine wood nematode and its insect vector, while integrating modeling, human practices, and education throughout our project. From laboratory experiments to stakeholder engagement and public outreach, we are working to connect science with real-world needs and turn innovative ideas into meaningful action for forest protection.
