Title: Targeted Live-Biotherapeutic Treatment for Metabolic Suppression of Colorectal Cancer Description: Colorectal cancer (CRC) is the United States' second leading cause of cancer-related death. CRC tumor growth is not only influenced by human metabolism and immune response but also by the gut microbiome. Fusobacterium nucleatum, a gut microbe, is often present around colorectal tumors and promotes tumor growth while weakening antitumor immunity. F. nucleatum uses the Fap2 protein to bind Gal-GalNAc, an overexpressed tumor marker. Our therapeutic aims to mimic this targeting mechanism, competing against F. nucleatum while positioning itself near the tumor. Once localized, it will release selected indole metabolites to engage tumor-suppressive pathways. Our biotherapeutic will express a built-in kill switch to limit its survival outside the intended conditions. Living systems can sense and act where biology happens. We are UC Davis iGEM: engineering a more precise response to colorectal cancer. Wiki | Official Page
