Title: What If Moss Could Restore Land Destroyed by Mining? Description: What if moss could help restore land devastated by mining? 🌱 Team Sanjeevani is harnessing synthetic biology to engineer Physcomitrium patens for enhanced metal uptake and sequestration, exploring a sustainable approach to mining waste remediation and land restoration. Moss already clings to bare rock and regrows from tiny fragments. Because it is haploid and recombines DNA with yeast-like precision, it also takes clean, targeted edits. We are giving it a faster way to pull metals in, with the transporters IRT1 and COPT1 and a third branch aimed at trivalent ions. A metallothionein, AtMT4b, then locks the metal safely inside the cell; it is joined to the transporter by a self-cleaving 2A peptide, so both are made together. In the dry lab, we chose that metallothionein by molecular docking, built a genome-scale metabolic model of P. patens, and mapped how much copper and iron it tolerates. This film covers what we built, what failed, and how we’ll prove it. Our moss held onto basalt and granite in the lab, and an ICP-MS uptake test is designed. Everything so far is lab-contained: nothing has been deployed on a mine. Wiki | Official Page
